World’s Largest E-Methanol Reactor Installed in China

A Major Reactor Reaches the Liaoyuan Project


Carbon Recycling International has delivered and successfully installed what it describes as the world’s largest e-methanol reactor at the Liaoyuan E-Methanol Project in Jilin Province, China.

The installation was announced on June 30, 2026 and represents a major construction milestone for the facility.

The methanol converter is a central component of CRI’s proprietary Emissions-to-Liquids technology, which converts carbon dioxide and renewable hydrogen into methanol.

CRI says the project remains on schedule to move toward commissioning and start-up later in 2026.

First Phase Targets 170,000 Tonnes a Year


The first phase of the Liaoyuan project is designed to produce approximately 170,000 tonnes of e-methanol annually.

The facility will use hydrogen produced from renewable-powered electrolysers together with captured carbon dioxide of biogenic origin.

CRI’s system is also designed for flexible operation, allowing production to respond to variations in renewable electricity availability.

That flexibility is particularly relevant for e-fuel facilities connected to wind and other variable renewable generation, where electricity supply may change considerably throughout the day.

E-Methanol Moves Toward Larger Commercial Plants


The Liaoyuan project demonstrates the increasing scale of power-to-methanol development.

E-methanol is produced by combining renewable hydrogen with a suitable carbon source, creating a liquid fuel and chemical feedstock that can be transported and stored using infrastructure similar to conventional methanol.

Interest is particularly strong in maritime transport, where methanol-capable vessels are creating potential demand for lower-carbon alternatives to fossil-derived marine fuels.

For project developers, however, commercial performance will depend heavily on access to low-cost renewable electricity, hydrogen production, reliable carbon supply and long-term customers.

Installation of the Liaoyuan reactor moves one of the sector’s largest projects closer to the point where those technical and commercial assumptions can be tested at industrial scale.
