Why Renewable Fuel Credit Prices Matter More Than Ever

RIN Prices Have Nearly Doubled in 2026


Renewable Identification Numbers have become one of the most important price signals in the U.S. renewable fuels market.

According to the U.S. Energy Information Administration, compliance credits for biomass-based diesel and ethanol roughly doubled in value between the beginning of 2026 and early June.

On June 4, D4 biomass-based diesel RINs traded at $2.41, while D6 ethanol RINs reached $2.37.

Both were close to the record highs reached in 2021.

The rise followed substantially higher renewable fuel requirements established under the federal Renewable Fuel Standard for 2026 and 2027.

As compliance obligations increase, higher RIN prices provide the additional economic incentive needed to encourage more renewable fuel production and blending.

A RIN Can Change the Economics of the Physical Fuel


RINs are created when qualifying renewable fuels are produced or imported into the United States.

Petroleum refiners and fuel importers covered by the Renewable Fuel Standard must obtain enough credits to meet their annual obligations, either by blending renewable fuels themselves or by purchasing RINs from other market participants.

That means the price of a RIN can directly affect the economics of producing and blending the underlying fuel.

One gallon of biodiesel typically generates 1.5 RINs, while renewable diesel can generate between 1.6 and 1.7 RINs per gallon.

At early-June 2026 prices, EIA estimated that these credits were worth more than $3.50 per gallon for biodiesel and renewable diesel.

For ethanol, the combination of lower physical ethanol prices and higher D6 RIN values created an effective discount of more than $2 per gallon relative to gasoline during parts of May and June.

Compliance credits are therefore not simply an administrative feature of the Renewable Fuel Standard. They can materially change the commercial incentive to produce, blend and purchase renewable fuel.

Higher Mandates Make the Credit Market More Important


The importance of RIN pricing has increased because the federal compliance market itself is becoming larger.

EPA’s final 2026 Renewable Fuel Standard sets total applicable renewable fuel requirements at 26.81 billion RINs, rising to 27.02 billion in 2027.

For biomass-based diesel, the applicable requirement reaches 9.07 billion RINs in 2026 after reallocation associated with earlier small-refinery exemptions, increasing to 9.20 billion RINs in 2027.

Those higher obligations create demand not only for physical renewable fuel but also for the credits required to demonstrate compliance.

EIA expects the stronger mandates, higher petroleum fuel prices and expanding plant capacity to support record U.S. renewable diesel and ethanol production in 2026.

Its June forecast projects renewable diesel production to rise 24 percent from 2025 and biodiesel production to increase 41 percent.

The relationship works in both directions.

High RIN prices can improve producer margins and stimulate additional supply, while insufficient renewable fuel production can make compliance credits scarcer and more expensive.

For investors, refiners and fuel producers, RIN prices therefore provide an important indication of how difficult the market believes it will be to satisfy renewable fuel obligations.

Understanding the U.S. biofuel market increasingly requires watching two markets at the same time: the physical fuel itself and the compliance credits attached to it.
