
Methanol-Capable Ships Move into Commercial Service
Methanol is moving from an emerging marine-fuel option toward broader commercial deployment as more dual-fuel vessels enter the global shipping fleet.
Maersk took delivery of Tangier Mærsk on February 2, 2026, the first vessel in a new series of six 9,000-TEU container ships equipped with dual-fuel engines capable of operating on methanol.
Four additional ships from the series are scheduled for delivery during 2026, with the final vessel expected in early 2027.
The development adds to a growing installed base of ships capable of using methanol and creates physical demand for renewable versions of the fuel, including bio-methanol and e-methanol.
The Methanol Fleet Is Creating a New Fuel Market
The growth in methanol-capable ships is beginning to reshape the marine fuel market.
DNV's Alternative Fuels Insight data showed 267 confirmed methanol-fuelled vessels either operating or on order in its February statistics, with container shipping accounting for 169 of them.
The increasing number of vessels matters because investment in ships and investment in renewable fuel production have to develop together.
A methanol-capable ship can operate on conventional methanol, but achieving meaningful lifecycle emissions reductions requires lower-GHG alternatives such as sustainably produced bio-methanol or e-methanol.
That is creating a new commercial market for renewable methanol producers beyond the chemical industry's traditional demand base.
Large-Scale Renewable Methanol Supply Is Beginning to Arrive
Fuel supply is now starting to catch up with the vessels.
Maersk expects to receive its first volumes of bio- and e-methanol in 2026 under its long-term agreement with Goldwind in China as the associated production facility approaches commercial operation.
The agreement covers approximately 500,000 tonnes of renewable methanol annually and combines bio-methanol with e-methanol produced using wind energy.
Maersk has also secured additional long-term bio-methanol supply from LONGi, with first volumes expected during 2026.
The challenge remains scale and cost. A growing methanol-capable fleet does not automatically guarantee sufficient volumes of competitively priced renewable methanol.
However, the combination of new vessels, long-term offtake agreements and new production capacity represents an important shift for the e-fuels market.
Renewable methanol is increasingly moving from demonstration projects toward a fuel with identifiable commercial customers, contracted volumes and dedicated shipping demand.
