Ghent Selected for a €500 Million SAF Facility
LanzaTech has selected North Sea Port in Ghent, Belgium, as the permanent location for its FLITE sustainable aviation fuel project.
Announced on May 11, 2026, the project represents an estimated investment of approximately €500 million and is planned as a commercial-scale Alcohol-to-Jet production facility.
The plant is designed to produce around 79,000 tonnes of sustainable aviation fuel and 9,000 tonnes of renewable diesel per year.
LanzaTech says the facility would use the LanzaJet Alcohol-to-Jet process, converting ethanol into renewable hydrocarbon fuels for aviation and road transport applications.
The Project Moves Closer to Final Investment Decision
The Ghent site selection marks an important development milestone, but the project has not yet reached Final Investment Decision.
LanzaTech said Front-End Engineering Design is substantially complete, the site has been secured and letters of intent for feedstock supply are already in place.
The company has also established preliminary offtake frameworks for the fuel.
The next major step is the environmental permitting process, including submission of the Environmental Impact Assessment scoping notification to Belgian authorities.
These milestones are intended to reduce development risk as the project moves toward financing and a potential Final Investment Decision.
North Sea Port Provides an Existing Fuel and Logistics Network
The project will be located within North Sea Port, a major industrial and logistics cluster connecting Belgium and the Netherlands.
The site provides access to existing liquid-fuel storage, pipelines, road and rail transport, inland waterways and maritime infrastructure.
LanzaTech also highlighted the proximity of the ArcelorMittal Steelanol ethanol facility, located across the canal from the selected site, as one of the advantages of the location.
The project is expected to support around 300 full-time-equivalent positions during a three-year construction phase and approximately 50 permanent jobs once operational.
The planned fuel is being designed to meet requirements including CORSIA, ReFuelEU Aviation and the UK SAF Mandate.
If the project reaches FID and construction, Ghent would become an important new production centre for commercial-scale Alcohol-to-Jet fuel in Europe.
