
Haru Oni Renews Its European RFNBO Certification
HIF Global announced on July 6, 2026 that its Haru Oni e-Fuels facility in southern Chile had renewed its ISCC EU certification for the production of Renewable Fuels of Non-Biological Origin.
The certification confirms that the facility continues to meet European Union sustainability requirements covering renewable electricity, greenhouse-gas emissions, traceability and chain of custody.
Located near Punta Arenas in Chile’s Magallanes region, Haru Oni produces synthetic fuels using renewable electricity, green hydrogen and recycled carbon dioxide.
The renewed certification covers the production chain for e-methanol, e-gasoline and synthetic liquefied gas.
Certification Connects Production with the European Market
RFNBO certification is becoming increasingly important as European transport regulation creates dedicated demand for renewable hydrogen and synthetic fuels.
To qualify, producers must demonstrate that the electricity used to produce renewable hydrogen meets European renewable-energy criteria and that the resulting fuel achieves the required lifecycle greenhouse-gas savings.
Haru Oni first obtained ISCC EU RFNBO certification in 2025.
According to HIF Global, the facility remains the only installation outside the European Union certified under the scheme for RFNBO e-methanol production and was the first facility worldwide to obtain the certification for e-gasoline.
Renewing the certification allows Haru Oni to continue demonstrating how synthetic fuels produced outside Europe can meet the sustainability and traceability requirements applied to the European renewable fuels market.
Haru Oni Provides a Real-World Test Bed for E-Fuels
Haru Oni has been producing synthetic fuels since 2022 and remains relatively small compared with the commercial-scale e-fuel plants now being proposed around the world.
Its current equipment includes a 3.4 MW wind turbine and a 1.2 MW electrolyser, while annual e-gasoline production capacity is approximately 130,000 litres.
That scale makes the facility primarily a demonstration and learning platform rather than a major contributor to global fuel supply.
Its importance lies in proving the complete production chain in real operating conditions — from renewable electricity and electrolysis to e-methanol and downstream synthetic fuels.
HIF is using the experience gained at Haru Oni as it develops significantly larger e-fuel projects in other markets.
For the wider e-fuels sector, continued certification of an operating facility also demonstrates that regulatory compliance, traceability and physical fuel production can be integrated within the same Power-to-X value chain.
